José Rivera
jose@cajanegracollective.org

Born in Mexico City's Colonia Moctezuma and raised in Boyle Heights, Jose Rivera has been documenting Chicana/Latino
culture since 1997. His admiration of artists' collectives like ASCO, East Los Streetscapers, Royal Chicano Air Force, Taller de Grafica Popular and Die Brucke, inspired him to start the photographer's collective Caja Negra in 1999. Caja Negra Collective has worked towards creating art that sparks dialogue, promotes social change and preserves Latina/Chicano culture and history.

Since graduating from Cal State Los Angeles,he has worked at various non-profit social service agencies, providing emergency services to homeless youth and families. Jose's other passions are the art of David Alfaro Siqueiros, las canciones de Silvio Rodriguez y Mercedes Sosa, the fiery jazz of John Coltrane, the revolutionary woodcuts of Leopoldo Mendez and the murals of la Virgen de Guadalupe.
